  3. Calls by UCD Student Union, which is campaigning for a YES vote, to close Universities on Polling Day to facilitate the student vote, are extraordinary, Save the 8th has said.

  7. “Polls are open for fifteen hours on polling day to facilitate voters who want to cast a ballot. The overwhelming majority of Irish Citizens will get up that day, bring children to school, go to work, come home,collect the children, make dinner, clean the house, help with homework, have a full day, and still find time to vote.

  9. Students do not deserve special treatment. They are adults, like everybody else. They are not the only people who live away from home, and in any case have the right to register to vote at their college address.

  11. This is another example of the State being asked to bend over backwards to, in essence, facilitate a YES vote.

  13. This referendum has been held on a Friday, to facilitate Students. It is being held in May, to facilitate Students. These are all things the Student lobby has lobbied for over many years.

  15. Lots of members of the public work away from home in jobs that make voting difficult, and manage to vote anyway. The Irish state has bent over backwards to facilitate student voting. They do not deserve a special day off, and to be treated like children, to perform a civic duty that takes less than five minutes. If Students want to be treated like adults, they should act like adults”.
